Observability & operations: solution concept
An observability concept for tracing a request: signals, OpenTelemetry data flow, diagnosis and limitations of an illustrative operations interface.
Solution concept · illustrative interface · not a client case study

The task
A team needs to distinguish application, database and external-service issues when a request slows down or fails. The interface illustrates one possible operational view. It does not display measured production data.
One possible architecture
Instrumented services produce metrics and traces. A collector processes approved attributes and forwards data to a suitable backend. Dashboards address selected questions; a runbook connects an alert to an accountable person.
- Request → instrumented services → correlated signals
- Collector → filtering and routing → telemetry backend
- Dashboard or alert → runbook → accountable team
Important decisions
Retention and collection scope affect costs. Personal content and secrets must not enter attributes without control. An alert needs an action and an owner; a chart alone does not establish reliable operations.
Evaluation and limitations
A controlled failure exercise would check that a request remains traceable across services and the responsible person can interpret the finding. The illustration demonstrates neither uptime nor faster recovery. Those claims would require real measurements over an appropriate period.
